I will only bring brands into my store that I would use on my own child, and I have concerns regarding diapers made in China.

I did try one brand of well known cloth diapers made in China as I had been told they were made in a very ethical factory, with the highest quality materials using a material similar to PUL called TPU. First off, TPU is still a petroleum product no matter how you name it. I must say that I was was bitterly disappointed with the delaminiation issues and very poor customer service my customers received from the manufacturer for warranty issues. That is when I made a decisions to clearance that particular brand and to not carry anything made in countries with questionable safety standards and "sweat shops". I am not saying that this brand used a "sweat shop"; however I am firm on my stand that this is a tough thing to monitor in a country such as China.

My reasons for not carrying diapers made in China are abundant, but these are the primary reasons:

~I cannot monitor work conditions in the factories in a country such as China for obvious reasons, therefore I am not comfortable with just "being told" that the work conditions are favorable and workers are treated and paid well. This is just too difficult for me to be assured that this is true, and given the history of "sweat shops" in China and other third world countries, I cannot support this practice. The risks of poor work conditions is just too high, and the historical reputation of practices in factories in China speaks quite loudly all on its own. My moral compass is very strong, and at the end of the day, I need to know that I have not played a role in this scenario.

~I am also very concerned about who is overseeing the safety standards for products made in third world countries. Have you ever stopped to think about what goes into the PUL? (or TPU, or any other method of waterproofing fabric). There are petroleum products in the PUL and TPU. In North America these materials require some very strict regularions and standards to meet North American standards for what is acceptable to be worn by a child. What standards are adhered to in China? Just food for thought. Personally, I know that one of my chinese made diapers I bought from EBay to test melted into a black blob in the dryer, and smelled so strongly of chemicals that it was horrid. I am guessing it would not have passed any safety standards. I should also mention that my other brands of North American made diapers that were in that load of laundry did not melt and never have in the subsequent 4 years of use of them. :-) Does this frighten you just a bit when you stop to think about that diaper that melted in my dryer being on your child's bum day after day? Hmmmm... just food for thought.

~Our economy. What better reason could there be to buy products made in North America than to support our North American economy? The past few years have been an overall economical struggle for North America. As things spiralled downward for our countries here close to home, I really feel that it was an eye opening experience for me to research the impact of buying products made in North America vs. other parts of the world. At that time I made a conscious choice to shift my gears and focus on products as close to "home" as I possibly could whenever it was possible. At that point you may have noticed a shift in many of my product lines that ALL NATURAL BABIES discontinued and in the lines that were made closer to home, in North America.

~Cheaper is not always better. We all know that from buying clothing, groceries, vehicles, etc. That comment is valid when purchasing diapers also. You do get what you pay for. Plain and simple. I think that the points I have covered clarify that, but also I can vouch for the "life" of the North American brands of diapers vs. the cheaper versions made in countries with less than desirable practices with materials that definitely do not seem to be of the same standard.

If my customers have an issue with a diaper that I carry, it is almost a 100% guarantee that I can assist that customer in accessing warranty for that product. The North American companies have shown excellent customer service practices and have the staying power of remaining in business for the "long haul". Many of the diapers being imported from countries such as China seem to come and go more quickly and new brands pop up regularly but are gone before the year is up! For me, that IS a HUGE concern as I believe in excellent customer service for my customers and if the companies no longer exist, how can that occur!!!? Let's look at the North American companies and see how many of them have been around for several years!!! That speaks volumes to the ability to access them for customer service and warranty. :-) Again, that alone carries value.

Okay I am off of my soapbox now. I do know that many of you will have differing opinions, and that is why we are all individuals. I believe that everyone makes the best possible choices for their children; however I often wonder if those choices would be the same or different if more research into all facets of the product would be explored. I do know that the more I researched foreign made diapers, the more that my concerns increased regarding the safety and quality of the product, the quality of the people putting those diapers together in other countries (often in sweat shops), and the impact that we have on our own economy.

Shopping local has so many benefits. I have really shifted my focus even in day to day shopping for items like groceries, clothing, etc. I love supporting businesses close to home. How about you? What changes are you willing to make? What manufacturing practices have impacted your decisions?

Is cheaper "truly" always better? Or are there costs to safety and sociological prices attached? Just my thoughts that I wanted to share with you.

Auctions!

I have had NUMEROUS requests from customers asking me if I would ever consider having Auctions! At first I said that I didn't think so. Then I realized that I LOVE BIDDING ON AUCTIONS and that it might be fun to add a few items to our ALL NATURAL BABIES facebook group to try it out and see how it goes.

After consulting with several friends, customers, and family members I decided to jump to the next step. Suggestions ranged on how to go about this and which things to put into the auctions, and at the end of it all I knew we would give it a try!!!

I wandered through the store trying to pick a few items out to kick this whole new adventure off. After a great deal of thought it had been decided that many of the items would be things that we were either overstocked in or in the process of clearing out. There would also be an occasional surprise thrown in for our valuable customers with a currently stocked "THANK YOU" type of an item that is popular! This would be yet another way that we can say THANK YOU to all of our great customers.

Awww.. so the next question that all of you are asking, is what are the "surprise items" going to be? For that, my dear customers, you will have to stay tuned and check back regularly. Some of the items will be "ZOOM AUCTIONS" meaning that they will be posted and will end much quicker than the usual auctions! This is just meant to add more excitement to the whole bidding process! :-)

Stay tuned and thanks everyone for adding a little fun to the ALL NATURAL BABIES FACEBOOK PAGE!!! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150167269312056.304514.570372055#!/all.natural.babies

Solutions for bed wetters

This has been a topic that many parents have been asking for assistance with. Your child is trained throughout the daytime, but is struggling with night time wetting, sometimes for a short period of time, sometimes for years. The disposable pull up types of diapers are frustrating for many parents as their child is soaking through before morning... so they come to me asking for help!

One of the most successful solutions we have found for this are the large DryBees Hybrid AIO diapers. They come n neat prints and colors, so the parent and I often "pitch" these to the child as "big girl or big boy" night time underwear. We have found that by letting your child pick their own print or color that they often find that these are appealing.

The nice part of the DryBees Hybrid AIO diaper is that it has a 3 layer microfiber sewn in and has an outer waterproof PUL layer AND a pocket to allow the parent to customize the amount of absorbency needed. For the older children who are still experiencing issues with bedwetting I have been recommending that the parent use a 2 or 3 layer hemp insert from AMP in the pocket to "boost" the absorbency of this diaper.

Feedback from parents has been phenomenal!!!! Goodbye disposable pull up type diapers and all the frustration that goes with them! DryBees is a much better solution that is making parents and children happier through the night! It is also reducing the waste that is filling landfills, and it is a MUCH healthier choice for your child as it is NOT filled with chemicals and carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

These diapers can be viewed at ALL NATURAL BABIES GROUP: http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=1422215&op=11&o=global&view=global&subj=35071342395&id=570372055

To place your order or to arrange to view our stock please contact:

Edmonton and surrounding area
Melody Baird
allnaturalbabies@gmail.com
780-922-6788

Central Alberta area
Laura Smith
glsmith2@telus.net
403-748-4362

Recycled woolies as they are made from wool sweaters and sewn together to make fantastic wool covers for cloth diapering! I am a die hard wool user for night time use, and lately more and more I find myself using wool covers throughout the day with the boys I have. I find that they keep getting rashes every time they go on visits with biological parent and have to wear disposables... so the very best way to deal with diaper rash is to put them in a fitted diaper (or a prefold) with a wool cover as it is 100% breathable!!! The rash disappears quickly! And for night time we NEVER have even one leak at night and I have had some VERY heavy wetting foster babies go through here! :-)

At first I was a total skeptic about wool. When I think of wool I think of itching and scratching and wiggling around trying to reach spots to scratch.. hahaha! But the wool used in the wool covers, the soakers, the shorts and the longies is always a high quality wool that is soft to the touch and does not cause itching. Usually it will be merino wool, but lamb's wool or cashmere often works very well too! I have been VERY picky about choosing only wool that feels nice and is a high enough quality to make great covers!

I was struggling with finding wool covers that were not just plain wraps or soakers (like underwear type coverage) as I wanted to keep their little legs warm too and did not really want to have to use leg warmers as I still find there are gaps and with our weather being pretty chilly at times that is not ideal. So I decided that rather than ordering them from the internet and waiting forever, that I would make some! In testing the few that I have made I have been MORE than happy and have had several people ask me if I would make them some too!
I was joking with Laura last night that I really, really, really need to start making some pink ones or least more girly ones so I won't be tempted to keep them all for my little guys. They have all been turning out so darn cute that I don't want to part with them. The first pair I made was more like a long john pattern, so they are really quite geeky looking but they work UNBELIEVABLY as the pattern I developed has a double soaker area so they are PERFECT for night time!!! :-) I also have a couple of pairs of soakers made and a pair of teensie tiny little wool longies. Now I just need a baby that is teensie tiny to put them on!!!!
Many people have been asking about the CARE OF WOOL COVERS. When I first read the instructions with my very first wool covers I almost fainted. I thought it sounded so complex, but once I went through the steps I realized that a lot of information in the directions were not “steps” but simply really useful history about wool and information about the benefits of wool covers. Whew! I am not one that likes reading directions to begin with as anyone that knows me well will tell you. So I have condensed the directions for our customers at ALL NATURAL BABIES into a few simple steps.
1. Run a sink partially filled with lukewarm water. Too cold or too hot will shock the wool and shrink them.
2. Using a wool wash (NOT WOOLITE, as it is not gentle enough, or the proper type of wash for wool covers) add the amount of wash recommended on the bottle. **We carry some fantastic wool washes. Another recommended brand is Eucalan.
3. Place your wool covers into the water and GENTLY squish them and swoosh them around. DO NOT WRING THEM … BE GENTLE. Leave them soak for approximately 15-20 minutes in the lukewarm water, warming it a bit throughout if needed.
4. Gently lift the wool cover out and gently squeeze most of the water out. DO NOT WRING.
5. Lay it on a towel on your counter and start at the edge of the towel and begin rolling the towel with the cover in it until while gently squeezing with each roll that you do. Do this until you reach the other end of the towel.
6. Remove the wool cover from the towel and lay the cover flat to dry. Do NOT place it in the hot sunshine, but it does well to place it in a warm place in the home. Sweater drying racks work well, but are not necessary. I use a clothing drying rack and lay it across a few of the bars. When partially dry you can always flip it over and turn it inside out to dry quicker too.

In one of my upcoming blogs I will give the info and steps on how to lanolize the wool covers! This is also MUCH easier than I first thought. The whole process takes less than half an hour once every 2-4 weeks for washing the covers and about every 6-8 weeks you will need to relanolize. So when you actually think about it, the “laundering” process is much less frequent than washing regular diaper covers.

Wow.. where does time go? So much for blogging regularly!!!! *sigh*

Wow... I must apologize to those of you who have faithfully been checking this blog, only to find it outdated and "silent". Life has been hectic and although it is not an excuse, it is as honest of an explanation as I can give. :-)

On the upside of things there has been so much happening that I really don't know where to start! So I will do a bit at a time and not overwhelm everyone in the next 5 minutes.. hahaha...

Laura Smith joined ALL NATURAL BABIES at the beginning of January 2010 as the Central Alberta ALL NATURAL BABIES manager. She has taken on all sales, education, information and support for customers who are looking at cloth diapering and other products from ALL NATURAL BABIES.

Laura is located about 5 minutes from Bentley and is the mother of two wonderful little boys who have both been cloth diapered. Laura is a "wee bit" of a cloth diaper "guru" for lack of a better description. Between Laura and I there are few diapers left untested out there. :-) She is very passionate about finding various brands, styles and diapers and testing them to the limit. In fact I often chuckle as she tests them so much so that we joke that the only thing we don't do to them is run over them with a truck! Having said that you can rest assured that if diapers pass both mine and Laura's standards that you are going to be happy with them! :-)

My plan is to open the Sherwood Park / Edmonton area store in the next while. There is so much news to share with you!!!

First I would like to thank everyone for your continued support! It is you, the greatest customers on earth, that make my business successful! Your suggestions are always appreciated and are the driving force behind many of my decisions in determining which products are best for ALL NATURAL BABIES! There seems to be a lot of new products since the last time I blogged!

Some of the new products include:

LOVEYBUMS diapers, wool covers, and accessories! These are the top of the line, high quality products! The workmanship in the diapers is excellent! I am so VERY VERY impressed with the fit of this diaper! I will be testing the wool covers this week and will be able to give feedback on them soon! If they are nearly as good as the actual diapers then I am sure I will be pleased!

RUMPAROOZ are the newest diaper that I have chosen to bring on board. The feedback I have had from customers and friends has been phenomenal. I am anxiously awaiting their arrival, then I will test them to ensure that they are as good as I have been told! Once that is done then I will be posting that they are in and available! :-) They have a neat feature that none of the other one size fits all diapers that I carry have. They have internal gussets that help to keep messes where they belong!!! In the diaper!!! They also claim to fit from very tiny right through diaper training so I will have a mom testing these with a newborn baby to see if they are a good fit on teensy babies. We all know that there are only a very few brands that fit well on the teensy babes.

ZOOBIES... There are several new additions to the Zoobies family! There is a soft sunggly moose that is so cute! A black bear that will steal your heart! A lady bug that every little one will love! And a bumblee that is sure to charm his way into your life! I have also restocked many of the favorite standbys from the originals! So the stock is ready for Christmas!!!

News on the home front. I do not usually use this blog to share anything going on in my personal life, but this time it effects the business in a big way! After several years of commuting back and forth between our two homes, Darrell and I have purchased an acreage together!! Although we take possession of the acreage this Friday, I will not be moving there until mid December. So with very mixed emotions I am taking this opportunity to share with everyone that ALL NATURAL BABIES will be relocating to the Sherwood Park area (east of Edmonton).

I will continue to provide service to customers from Central Alberta in any way that is possible. With internet services and the ability to ship with Canada Post, Greyhound, and other companies I will still be able to get products to you! I am hoping that by the time I move the website for ALL NATURAL BABIES will be completed and ready for orders to be placed directly through there. I have also had offers from some of my long standing customers that they would be willing to host an Open House in their homes every so often to allow customers from the Red Deer and surrounding areas to come and pick up orders which they could pre-order, or to view new products at that time!

As I said, this decision came with many mixed emotions! I have loved living in this area, and loved the opportunity to meet so many great people through my business !!! It has been a phenomenal experience and one that I wish to continue! Throughout the next several weeks until mid-December I will continue to schedule times for appointments; however you will notice that the method will change a bit to accomodate more people. (ie: there may be days that will be "Introduction to Cloth Diapers" that will be open to anyone interested in that topic. Another day might be posted as "Open Hours" and hours will be listed that people can just drop in, allowing mroe than one person at a time.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone over the next couple of months and helping you with getting all of the products that you need for your little ones! Take care and have a great day!

Melody

Where does the time go??? Looks like it could be a brutal one!

Also on order are the Kokkoon car seat snuggly warm bags for infant carseats. I love these as they meet Canada Transport safety guidelines! These are a must have for all families with infants! No more bundling up baby in a snowsuit for errands... just plop them in their car seat and zip up the bag and baby is toasty warm and safe as can be!

SO many new items are arriving at ALL NATURAL BABIES. Their products provide a line of premium natural skin care products that balance the needs of our urban lives with our North American connection to the outdoors. Their Mom and Baby product line is absolutely amazing offering fantastic natural products to my customers! This company has been featured in many magazines recently, including: Elle, Fashion 18, and Flare!

Today I will provide information regarding the `Natural Sun Care Creme`and `Butterfly Weed Herbals - In the Bush Citronella Body Oil`

NATURAL SUN CARE CREME
Chemical-free, Substance Sun Care Creme keeps delicate skin protected bycreating a natural physical barrier to protect against the elements.

Natural oils of Shea Butter, Sesame Seed oil and Jojoba oil offer addedprotection, while moisturizing and soothing sensitive skin.
Our botanical blend of Calendula, Grapeseed and Green Tea extract cooland soothe over-exposed skin. Water resistant, this formula is safe forchildren of all ages.

Benefits· Active ingredients of 20% microionized zinc oxide acts as a physical barrier to protect against UVA and UVB rays.· Natural sunblock offers UVA/UVB protection without harmful, skin irritating chemicals, found most chemical sunscreen ingredients.· Provides protection for up to 40 minutes in the sun. Equivalent to an SPF 30.· Water resistant, and safe for kids.· Moisturizing, with oils of Shea Butter and Jojoba oil, which also offer added protection against the sun.· Anti-Oxidant Green Tea and Grapeseed Extract help re-generate skin cells.· Calendula Flowers soothe and heal sensitive skin.
The Ingredients are the ProductActive Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 20% Soyabean oil, Calendula flowers, St. Johnswort flowers, Jojoba oil, Seasme Seed oil, Green Tea extract,Grapeseed extract, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Vitamin E Acetate, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Capryl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Deionized Water, Lavender, Citronella essential oils.
What is the difference between a physical barrier vs a chemical sunscreen?

A physical barrier sunscreen physically blocks the sun's UV rays. These are often found in ingredients of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Often, sunblocks containing these two ingredients have been messy and opaque. Substance Natural Sun Care Creme however, uses microionized zinc. This we feel is the safest & most effective option. It creates the same physical barrier, but is more transparent, and less messy when rubbed in.
Physical barriers also have the added benefit over chemical sunscreen of blocking UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin's surface, increasing the risk of celluar skin damage. Most chemical sunscreens do not block UVA rays effectively. The best known and proven UVA protection is provided by products that contain zinc oxide.Furthermore chemical sunscreens can be an irritant to sensitive skin. Zinc, on the other hand, has many beneficial properties including being anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory; beneficial to sensitive, delicate skin.

Butterfly Weed Herbals - "IN THE BUSH" Citronella Oil
Deet Free, "In the Bush" Citronella Oil is a non-toxic alternative for enjoying the great outdoors. Apply generously over exposed skin and re-apply when required.
Tested and used by tree-planters since 1997, this formula is safe on kids and pets.
Ingredients
Eucalyptus leaves, Lemongrass, Pennyroyal leaves, Tansy flowers, Soya Bean Oil, with essential oils of Citronella, Cedar leaf, Lavender, and Peppermint.
Features and Benefits
Deet Free, all natural, non toxic, safe for kids and pets
Long lasting, its herbal and essential oil blend naturally repels mosquitoes and black flies through its scent.
Lasts up to two hours, and can safely be re-applied through out the day.
Safe for daily use
Citronella, Lavender and Soya bean Oil are recognized by Health Canada, as safe alternatives to Deet.

Please contact me if you have any questions about these products! Lots of new stock from several different wholesalers! Where to begin....

Little Soles shoes arrived!! Wow... they are very impressive! I LOVE THEM! The quality is absolutely amazing and they are so much nicer than they looked. I now know why so many of my customers recommended them! I just wish they made them in MY size.. I do have some extras in stock for people to view or for sale. Ask for details.

Happy Heinys stock arrived today! The training pants that so many of you have been waiting for are now in stock! Give me a call to set up a time for you to come by and check them out. There are also several other brands and styles of training pants in stock. Each brand has their perks and it really is a personal choice as to which brand will fit and work best for your little one!

For those of you who have requested the DryBees sized diapers these have arrived!!! Some very cute prints came in this batch! Lots of stock in all sizes available at the present time!

I had the "joy" (yes that is sarcasm... sorry ... lol) of testing the silk liners on my little one this week. She has a bit of a teething diaper rash that is being stubborn. I decided to try the silk liners as these liners have an antimicrobial property and come highly recommended for sensitive skin and rashes. I was totally skeptical! But the great news is that it really has been working well and I am seeing improvements. The joys of 2 year old molars!!!!

Due to tons of requests for an all natural products including sunscreen and bug repellant, I have placed an order for these products and will try to get the details of each posted on FACEBOOK in the next few days. I chose brands that are Canadian made and come highly recommended with great customer reviews! It will be nice to have deet free bug repellent options for my own family as well as yours!

Okay, I am all typed out for tonight and will try to update as often as I can to keep this up to date! (thanks for the nudge from one of my fantastic customers, this posting made it on here tonight) ;-)

Melody Baird
ALL NATURAL BABIES
mlbaird@shaw.ca

First time blogging...

WELCOME TO ALL NATURAL BABIES' BLOG... my very first attempt at blogging, so bear with me! :-)

Wow what a fantastic weekend that was! A bit on the HOT side for my liking, but I know many of you love the hot hot hot weather so I hope you had a very enjoyable weekend with your loved ones!

I will be using this blog to try to keep everyone up to date on exciting new products, sales, order deadlines for specific items, and any changes that may be occurring!! So here goes...

This week I will contine with the clearance sale on the Melissa and Doug items. Although many items have "flew out the door" there is still a good selection of puzzles, First Play toy sets, and some other miscellaneous items! These items are priced to sell well below the prices of other retailers in this area so take advantage of some early Christmas shopping! :-)

This week there will be a clearance on DryBees PUL pocket diapers. I have a very limited quantity in really colorful and cute prints. Regularly these sell for $17.99+GST each. Clearance price is: $14.99 +GST each.

One of the new items arriving very soon that will be here just in time for more of this hot summer weather is the Drip Stiks:

Keeps kids' clothes clean by catching the sticky drips from ice cream cones or any frozen treat on a stick.

Two products in one: One end holds frozen treats on a stick. Flip the Dripstik over and the other end holds ice cream cones in almost any size and variety.

Saves parents time from cleaning up colorful puddles from forgotten desserts.

Makes an easy birthday party favor! Serve ice cream without stressing about guests making a mess, then simply send the Dripstik home with them.

Perfect for road trips. Indulge your children with stops at ice cream shacks without worrying about the upholstery. Let them get the cone instead of a cup and spoon.

Durable, soft plastic is long-lasting and easy-care-- simply pop into the dishwasher!

Six fun kid colours: Bionic Blue, Mellow Yellow, Awesome Orange, Keen Green, Radical Red and Punky Purple.

I will post more items as they arrive.
